Mark Mumm

Mark started learning how to play the Alto Saxophone in 5th grade, although he originally wanted to play the trombone. Passion, family support, and inspiration from artists like David Bowie, Childish Gambino, and John Newman drive his love for music and the alto sax. What was your first instrument and what inspired you to learn it? Alto saxophone in 5th grade. I originally wanted to play trombone but my mother told me 'I'm not tall enough.' (I'm now 6'1") What keeps you dedicated and inspired to learn and grow your skills and knowledge? Passion. Pure and simple. I can't imagine life without music. It's been a saving grace, a crutch, a reason to live, a thing to bond over. What is your preferred instrument and why? Alto Saxophone. It's the instrument I've played the longest and the instrument that I can "speak" with most proficiently. Who are your major musical inspirations? (Composers, modern artists, orchestras, loved ones etc, anyone who really inspires you to make or play music) I wouldn't have been able to devote as much time to music as I have these past few years without the support of family. While none of them are musicians, I owe so much to them. In terms of compositions, I take a more contemporary approach and draw inspiration from (in no particular order): David Bowie, The Airborne Toxic Event, Frank Turner, John Newman, anberlin, Arkells, Childish Gambino Do you have a favorite composer? Max Richter. On the Nature of Daylight is just a heartbreaker (in an endearing way) every time Do you have a favorite modern artist? I have a little bit of trouble sticking with artists thru multiple releases these days, but I have so many albums that I can't put down: Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN", Emeli Sande's "REAL LIFE", Noah Gundersen's "WHITE NOISE", Bon Iver's "22, A Million". (maybe capitalization is the key to my heart) Favorite piece to play or listen to? The answer I give you now would change in 5 minutes. Not a chance I can give an honestly lasting answer here lol Favorite genre of music? I find myself returning to movie scores and cinematic instrumentals. I'm enamored by how this genre of music can be so visual. Favorite musical memory? A performance of Mozart's requiem by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus Seeing (er, hearing) Ambient Orchestra and Maya Beiser (cellist) rearrange and perform David Bowie's final album, Blackstar. Witnessing Eric Nally (Foxy Shazam) chew lit cigarettes mid-song. Rock n' roll, baby!

Cecilio CCO 400 Review and Guide – Key Information On this Instrument

Do you remember the first time you heard Eleanor Rigby?* I was gifted The Beatles ‘1’ album for my 11th birthday. Until that point in my life, my album collection was exclusively *NSYNC. (I think my ‘classic rock’ loving father took some offense to that, but I don’t! “Drrrrrty POP” forever!) I would listen to …

How to Find the Best Trombone Mouthpiece: My Best Advice (From A Life-long Trombone Player)

A trombone, like most musical instruments, is possibly more akin to a motorcycle than a bicycle. Okay, maybe they’re not that complex, but they are more complex than they seem and small changes to their individual parts can have wild impacts on their functionality. Most notably for a trombone, the choice of mouthpiece can have …

What is a Fretted Cello and Does it Work? (And Why I Suggest You Stay Away From Them)

Supposing you have little-to-no experience with instruments in the “string family,” you might ask, ‘Why don’t these instruments have frets in the first place? Do these instruments think they’re better than us? Surely these instruments would be easier to play with frets!’ To which the instruments might reply, ‘Read this article…and don’t call us Shirley.” …
